A 27 acre sanctuary on the banks of the Moonbah River — private fly fishing, platypus at dusk, and three world-class ski resorts just 45 minutes away.
Reserve Your StayNestled at 1,100 metres in the sought-after Moonbah Valley, Top Place sits on one of only six blue-ribbon trout streams on mainland Australia, with 400 metres of private Moonbah River frontage — you can cast a line right from the property. Heritage-listed structures dating to 1890 anchor you in history, while Thredbo, Perisher, and Charlotte Pass are just 45 minutes up the road for world-class skiing and snowboarding.
Top Place Moonbah is an escape to peace. A place to reset and reframe. A place to dream about another way - small ideas in big mountains. Listen to the river, talk to your family, play cards on the deck while sipping on the fresh mountain air. A place to slow down.
Stay at one of two properties. Top Place Lodge is a thoughtfully designed home which comfortable sleeps 8 people. There are two slow-combustion wood fireplaces, large windows and well-considered spaces take full advantage of the tranquil river-side setting. Top Place Hut is a heritage-listed two-bedroom cottage — originally constructed in 1890, it is the oldest remaining structure in the Moonbah area. A place were the men from the snowy river stayed as they drove the brumbies down from the mountains. It has a very special connection to the area’s history.
Step out the door, pick up a fly rod, and cast into 400 metres of private blue-ribbon trout water — brown and rainbow trout in one of Australia's finest streams, and continue upstream into Kosciuszko National Park
Two world-class resorts within 45 minutes — Thredbo's long alpine runs and apres scene and Perisher's vast terrain parks just there. Return to the fire each evening. Boot warmers and drying room provided
Hike to Mt Kosciuszko through alpine meadows, mountain bike the Thredbo Valley Track, or simply stargaze from a sky untouched by light pollution.
The Moonbah River is one of only six designated blue-ribbon trout fishing streams on mainland Australia — and 400 metres of it is yours to fish during your stay. No licence queues, no crowded banks, no rushing to beat the crowds. Just you, the river, and the rise of wild brown and rainbow trout.
Better yet, we border on Kosciuszko National Park - kms of river is available upstream. We provide quality fly fishing rods, reels, and a selection of flies complimentary to every guest — whether you're a seasoned angler or casting for the very first time. The best sessions are early morning and late afternoon, when the river comes alive and the platypus begin their evening patrols along the banks.
After a day on the slopes, return to the warmth of Top Place — stoke the wood fire, pour a glass of something local, and watch the valley settle under a dusting of frost. Ski gear hire and lift passes are available in Jindabyne, just 20 minutes away.
68,000 litres of rainwater catchment across four tanks powers the property — no mains water required. Every drop is collected, filtered, and cherished.
Our 400-metre Moonbah River frontage is managed to protect platypus habitat, native fish, and riparian vegetation.
The heritage-listed timber yards and cottage dating to 1890 have been carefully maintained — honouring the pastoral traditions that shaped this valley.
Slow-combustion heating from sustainably sourced firewood, passive solar design through large north-facing windows, and a deep respect for the land's carrying capacity.
The bustling alpine hub — lakeside dining, boutique shopping, gear hire, and the gateway to Kosciuszko National Park.
Two of Australia's finest ski resorts on your doorstep. From Thredbo's legendary long runs and village après-ski scene, to Perisher's 1,245 hectares of terrain — your ski season starts here.
Award-winning schnapps and gin crafted in the mountains. Warm fires, tasting paddles, and a café overlooking the ranges.
Certified ecotourism guided experiences — hiking, snowshoeing, rock climbing, and backcountry tours through pristine wilderness.
The kind of place where you arrive planning to stay the weekend and begin plotting how to stay forever. The river, the silence, the stars — it gets under your skin. Book it and thank me later.A Guest, Autumn 2026
